Conclusion
What would Dr. Seuss think of the controversy surrounding the 6 books Seuss Enterprise’s chose to discontinue publishing? Since Geisel passed away in 1991, 30 years before this decision was made, we will never know. What I do know based on what I have learned is that Seuss began publishing books in a time where the types of stereotypes we see portrayed in his books was not uncommon. I’m not saying that it was ok just that I do not believe he realized the harm those images caused.
Throughout his life we see that his art changed for the better and in at least one case he edited his work in attempt to remove the racial stereotype he created. If Geisel was alive today I would like to think that he would have found a way to edit the racist images in his books, remove them entirely, or support the discontinued publishing of the books containing them.
